This project examines the complex relationships between the US and the EU in the development of the multilateral trade system and the prospects for constructive negotiations in any new WTO Round. Topics investigated include the changing position of the EU in the multilateral trade process, the implication for trade policy of the new relationship between the European Commission and the Parliament, the development of the EU's position on agriculture and food safety, the resolution of the conflict over the EU banana regime and more generally over the issue of regionalism and trade preferences, and the impact of EU enlargement on transatlantic commercial relations. The project involves Tim Josling together with Stefan Tangermann (University of Gottingen) and other European counterparts. Tangermann visited for a short period during the Winter and Spring quarters 2000.
